Yet, the revelations did not end there. The archaeologists discovered that the city’s inhabitants were designed to subsist underground for extended periods, possibly months on end. Nevertheless, in the 1920s, the Cappadocian Greeks who dwelled here abandoned the city during the tumultuous period of the Greco-Turkish War.

Following the city’s rediscovery, excavations unveiled rooms designed for a multitude of purposes. These included areas for food storage, winemaking, and oil pressing, not to mention dining spaces where the inhabitants would have shared meals.

Moreover, they discovered the remnants of a chapel and a religious school, providing a glimpse into the spiritual lives of the city’s denizens. To maintain a breathable environment, livestock were kept on the upper levels to prevent their odors and gases from permeating the living quarters below, reflecting the careful planning and thoughtful design that went into the construction of this subterranean city.
