31. Audrey Hepburn’s fawn
Audrey Hepburn, the illustrious and beloved Hollywood actress, had a unique bond with a fawn named Pippin during the filming of “Green Mansions” in 1958. Hepburn, who played a woman in the Venezuelan jungle accompanied by a little fawn, was encouraged to care for the deer to establish a bond on-screen. Hepburn affectionately named her Pippin, or “Ip,” and went to great lengths to nurture the fawn. She fed Ip milk from a baby bottle, took her to social gatherings, and even shared her bed with the fawn. As Hepburn revealed in an interview at the time, her bond with Ip was akin to motherhood.
Noted photographer Bob Willoughby, who followed Hepburn for years, chronicled her unique relationship with Ip in his book “Remembering Audrey.” He wrote about the buzz created by Hepburn and her fawn companion in Beverly Hills, where people were often left astounded by the sight of the movie star being followed around town by the creature. After the filming of “Green Mansions” concluded, Hepburn was heartbroken to part ways with Ip. A year later, when she suffered a miscarriage and fell into depression, her husband managed to track down Ip and brought her home to lift Hepburn’s spirits. The return of the fawn had a profound impact, and soon after, Hepburn gave birth to a baby. For Hepburn, her bond with Ip, signified solace, companionship, and a celebration of life itself.
