Tippi Hedren, the acclaimed actress known for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds,” is also recognized for her unique bond with a majestic creature—a lion named Neil. In 1971, photographer Michael Rougier had the opportunity to document Hedren’s extraordinary relationship with Neil at her home in California. These captivating photographs offer a glimpse into their unconventional companionship and the unusual dynamics that unfolded.

Neil, a 400-pound mature lion, was no ordinary pet. He shared living quarters with Hedren, her daughter Melanie Griffith, and her then-husband Noel Marshall. The images captured Neil’s remarkable presence as he roamed freely throughout the house, from the kitchen to the living room, and even took leisurely swims in the swimming pool. Hedren’s decision to allow a powerful predator into her home showcased her deep passion for wildlife and her unique bond with these extraordinary creatures.

However, in hindsight, Hedren acknowledged the inherent risks involved in keeping a lion as a pet. She admitted that allowing a creature devoid of conscience or remorse genes to have such freedom was an incredibly risky choice. While the photographs convey a sense of a gentle giant, they serve as a reminder of the potential dangers that come with interacting closely with wild animals.
