Mana Shim

Mana Shim is an example of a female athlete who has been trying to break the stereotypes of female athletes. Unfortunately, she had to go through a lot before the world and the system would notice its flaws. She has been working to challenge stereotypes and promote awareness about critical issues in the sports world. A former American soccer player and current athlete advocate, she played as a midfielder for Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League.

In addition to her achievements on the field, Shim has also been vocal about her personal experiences with sexual orientation, mental health, and sexual harassment in sports. In 2013, she publicly revealed her sexual orientation just before the NWSL championship game, hoping to inspire and support the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2017, Shim bravely shared her diagnosis of bipolar disorder, helping to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health issues in sports. Her actions highlighted the importance of mental health support for athletes and encouraged others to seek help if they were struggling with similar challenges.

More recently, Shim has been a vocal advocate for survivors of sexual harassment and misconduct in women’s soccer. In 2021, she made allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse against her former manager Paul Riley, leading to his dismissal from his position with the North Carolina Courage and an investigation by the NWSL.

Through her actions and advocacy, Mana Shim has become a role model and leader for female athletes around the world, inspiring them to challenge stereotypes, promote awareness about critical issues, and advocate for change in the sports world.
