Too Pretty to Play? Why Female Athletes Struggle to Be Taken Seriously on Social Media

Alysha Newman’s road to becoming a pole vaulter for Team Canada was anything but straightforward. After retiring from gymnastics due to injury, she found her new passion in track and field, breaking records left and right. Her hard work paid off with a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games and a gold medal four years later, along with setting the Commonwealth pole vault record.

Despite a knee injury in 2018, Newman bounced back in 2019, breaking her own Canadian record twice. In 2021, she’s been back in action, aiming to break the five-meter barrier and win an Olympic medal.

But as a female athlete, Newman is no stranger to being objectified. She’s been sexualized in the sport naturally, by what she wears and her beauty. However, she’s decided to take control of the situation and join a subscription-based content platform. The platform allows her to connect with her true fans and share behind-the-scenes moments of her life without being exploited. And despite the platform’s reputation for explicit content, Newman insists that she’s “not naked” in any of her posts. Instead, she uses the platform to give fans an exclusive peek into her life and Olympic experiences.

After all, if the media is going to sexualize her, she might as well control the content and profit from it. And with her natural sales skills, Newman’s already a pro at it. Who says you can’t have it all?
